Public Safety & Environment Management System (PSEMS)

CSX's Public Safety & Environment  Management System (PSEMS) provides the framework to assure regulatory compliance and minimize the impact of our operations to the environment and to the communities in which we operate. PSEMS provides the programs, processes and procedures required to fulfill our commitments in health, safety, environment, security and outreach. It includes the principles of commitment, planning, implementation, verification and management review. This unique management system standard defines CSX’s commitment to our employees, customers and the communities through which we operate, to ensure stewardship of the goods we are entrusted with, and to promote sustainable operations.

Positive Train Control (PTC)

The 2008 Railroad Safety Improvement Act requires that PTC systems be implemented on passenger routes and lines with one or more TIH (toxic by inhalation hazard) cars and traffic greater than 5 million gross tons annually. PTC is designed to warn a locomotive engineer of the need for action, engage locomotive brakes and bring the train to a full stop in the unlikely even that an engineer fails to act. Development of PTC technology is under way at CSX, where it will affect locomotives, wayside devices and more than 16,000 miles of track. Technology

Technology plays a strong role in maintaining the safety and security of our railroad and our customer’s products. One example is wayside defect detectors, in use at strategic locations across the CSX network to monitor the health of rolling stock. Wayside detectors include infrared sensors that check wheel bearing temperature, acoustic sensors that listen for cracks in wheels, load impact detectors that look for wheel defects and other sensors that observe truck symmetry and other important conditions. This technology helps CSX predict potential failures and repair defects.

Infrastructure Maintenance

Maintenance of the railroad infrastructure is essential for reaching our goal of zero accidents and injuries. CSX spends more than $1 billion annually on improving and maintaining track, bridges, signal systems, equipment and operations, to keep customers' shipments moving safety and reliably.

Infrastructure Security Plan

Since the events of September 11, 2001, CSX has developed a security plan based on the Association of American Railroads model defined by a panel of security and railroad experts. CSX maintains that plan and works closely with national, state and local law enforcement and security organizations, including the Department of Homeland Security, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Department of Defense and the AAR Operations Center.
